Berlin – Many people in Germany still suffer from acute respiratory illness. For the week of October 28th, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) expects around 6 million people to be affected, regardless of whether they have visited a doctor, according to a current report. The values for adults have fallen slightly and those for children have risen slightly. However, the number of serious infections is still low.
The respiratory diseases are therefore mainly caused by rhinoviruses, i.e. the classic cold viruses, and coronaviruses.
Corona incidence decreased
According to experts, the corona incidence in the population has fallen since the end of September and was estimated at 700 cases per 100,000 inhabitants last week. The estimate is based on cases self-reported by people through an online portal.
Around 8,630 laboratory-confirmed corona infections were reported to the RKI last week (previous week: around 12,310). The flu and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) do not play a major role at the moment. So far, no outbreaks with at least five cases per outbreak have been reported to the RKI for either disease.
According to the RKI, the values can fluctuate more strongly and subsequently change due to the autumn holidays and public holidays in some federal states.
