Racing eliminated Corinthians this Thursday (31) and will be Cruzeiro‘s rival in the Copa Sudamericana decision, on November 23, at 5pm (Brasília time), at the General Pablo Rojas Stadium, in Assunção-PAR. The duel will be a showdown between Brazilians and Argentines, who have already decided two continental tournaments previously. Each one had a title.
1988 Super Cup
In the first final between Racing and Cruzeiro, the Argentines came out on top. It was in the 1988 Super Cup.
In the first meeting, held at the El Cilindro Stadium, in Avellaneda, on June 13, Racing won 2-1, with goals from Fernández and Colombatti. Robson scored for the celestials.
In the return duel, held at Mineirão, on June 18, Cruzeiro only managed a 1-1 draw. Catalán opened the scoring for the Argentines, and again Robson scored for the Minas Gerais team.
1992 Super Cup
Four years later, the two clubs returned to decide the Copa Libertadores Champions Super Cup, and it was Cruzeiro’s turn to celebrate at their rival’s home in Argentina.
In the first game, on November 18, Cruzeiro beat Racing 4-0, at Mineirão, in heavy rain. Cruzeiro’s goals were scored by Roberto Gaúcho (2), Luís Fernando Flores and Boiadeiro, celestial icons of the 1990s.
In the return match, in Avellaneda, on November 25, Racing won 1-0, with a goal from García, and saw Cruzeiro lift the cup at home.
Cruzeiro reached their second Supercup title, as they had beaten River Plate the previous year.
Copa Sudamericana 2024
The decision of the Copa Sudamericana, on November 23, in Asunción, will be led by Racing, owner of the best campaign in the group stage of the competition.
Racing led Group H, with 15 points, and had the best campaign in this stage of the Copa Sudamericana. Then, the Argentines eliminated Huachipato-CHI in the round of 16, Athletico-PR in the quarterfinals and Corinthians in the semifinals.
Cruzeiro led Group B, with 12 points. They then went on to beat Boca Juniors in the round of 16, Libertad-PAR in the quarter-finals and Lanús-ARG in the semi-finals.
