The English football club Aston Villa suffered its first defeat in the Champions League due to a strange penalty. In the 0-1 (0-0) away game at the Belgian representative Club Bruges, a blackout by Tyrone Mings caused the decisive scene of the game.
In the 52nd minute, Villa keeper Emiliano Martínez played a goal kick from the goal area to defender Mings, who picked up the ball in his hand. Apparently he thought that the game had not yet been restarted by the German referee Tobias Stieler. Stieler pointed to the point – and Bruges accepted the gift through Hans Vanaken.
Just a few weeks ago there were two hand penalties in a similar way in the game between 1. FC Magdeburg and SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the 2nd league.
In a Bayern game, the referee decided differently
In April, referee Glenn Nyberg did not award a penalty in a similar situation in the quarter-final first leg between Arsenal and FC Bayern. The game ended 2-2.
