New Delhi. Italy waited almost 25 years for the Davis Cup title but in the presence of Yannick Sinner, the team won its second consecutive title of this prestigious tennis men’s team competition on Sunday (24 November). World number one Sinner defeated Talon Greixpoor 7-6, 6-2 to give Italy a 2-0 victory over the Netherlands and end his brilliant season with a win.
“Coming back as defending champions and winning the title again – it’s one of the best feelings for all of us,” Sinner said. We are very happy to lift this trophy. Earlier, Matteo Berrettini gave Italy a great start and 1-0 lead in the final by defeating Botik Van de Gendsculp 6-4, 6-2.
In front of approximately 9,200 fans, Italy became the first team to win the Davis Cup twice since the Czech Republic in 2012 and 2013. Italy women’s team also won the Billie Jean King Cup by defeating Slovakia on Wednesday. Sinner won all four of her matches in Málaga, including the doubles match with Berrettini against Argentina in the quarter-finals.
