DFB women: national coach Wück on the captaincy question

The resignation of Alexandra Popp from the German national team has presented the new German national coach Christian Wück with a problem that needs to be solved. After the striker’s resignation, not only does the position in the center of the attack have to be filled, but a successor as captain must also be found.

As part of the top game in the women’s Bundesliga between FC Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt, the national coach now commented on the open position.

“I think it’s completely normal that you first want to get to know the structure of the team. You first have to get to know the different characters within the team. That’s why I haven’t decided yet,” explained Wück before the game SPORT1.

One of the favorites for the position seems to be the 55-time national player Giulia Gwinn. “Giuli (Giulia Gwinn, Anm. d. Red.) does it very well, she proved that at Wembley. Not just with her performance, but also how she conducted herself off the field. “I just want to get to know the players better so that I can make a decision,” said Wück.

In addition to Popp, Marina Hegering also announced the end of her national team career this year. According to Wück, we are “traveling an incredible amount” to find further reinforcements in this position. “We are of course primarily looking at players from the defense and from the defensive midfield, where we perhaps have the fantasy that they would be predestined for the central defender position,” confirmed the national coach.

The top game on Monday evening in particular could include some interesting candidates. “First you try to get an overview. There are an incredible number of national players, but also an incredible number of players who are interesting for us on the pitch. “So I think it will be an incredibly interesting game for me over 90 minutes,” confirmed Wück.
