Last weekend (November 16th/17th) there was a challenging double match day for the first team of the Herscheid Badminton Club. First we went to Bielefeld on Saturday afternoon, where the fourth game of the season against SV Brackwede was scheduled. The next challenge awaited on Sunday afternoon with a home game against TuS Friedrichsdorf. While the first game ended in a disappointing draw, the team was able to secure a clear victory in the second game.
The long journey to Brackwede put a strain on the Herscheid players at the start of the game, which was particularly noticeable in doubles. In the first men’s doubles, Andre Weckwerth and Pascal Galleinus had difficulty finding their way into the game. In the first two sets they didn’t really get into their rhythm, but with a tactical change they found their way back to their playing strength and were ultimately able to win the game in three sets (21:13, 13:21, 21:15). Things didn’t go smoothly from the start in the second men’s doubles either: Jonas Lebus and Rainer Cazzato won the first set 21:17, but then had to accept a defeat in the second set with 19:21. In the decisive third set they won the point for the team with 21:16.

The women’s doubles Sally Gleim and Lea Lebus slept through the first half of the first set and had to admit defeat 17:21. In the second set they found their usual strength and were able to win it clearly with 21:10. The third set was hard to beat in terms of excitement, but unfortunately many unnecessary mistakes in crucial moments led to them losing the set 18:21. That was particularly bitter because victory in this match would have been entirely possible and an important point fell by the wayside.
In the first men’s singles, Galleinus had no chance and clearly lost in two sets with 10:21 and 18:21. Things went better for Weckwerth, who won the second men’s singles safely in two sets and thus secured the third point for BC Herscheid. In the third men’s singles, Cazzato almost had the fourth point in his pocket: He won the first set comfortably with 21:15, but then dropped the second set. In the third set, Cazzato led 20:17 before missing all set points and ultimately losing 20:22. This bitter defeat put a negative accent on the otherwise strong course of the game. Lea Lebus showed a dominant performance in the women’s singles and gave her opponent no chance with 21:6 and 21:9.

This meant the fourth point was secured for the Herscheiders and the draw was already secured. But the final mixed match between Jonas Lebus and Sally Gleim, which was supposed to decide whether the team won or drew, took an unexpected turn. The two started very strongly and won the first set 21:11. In the second sentence
However, Brackweder turned the tables and took the set with the same result (21:11). In the third set, the Herscheid team made too many mistakes, especially with serves and positioning, and ultimately had to give up the match 19:21. A bitter end to an overall narrow draw.
The next challenge was on Sunday: the home game against the 4th team from TuS Friedrichsdorf. Despite the stress of the previous day, the team was more focused this time. While Pascal Galleinus and Andre Weckwerth lost in three sets in the first men’s doubles, Rainer Cazzato and Jonas Lebus scored confidently in two sets with 21:12 and 21:7 in the second men’s doubles. The women’s doubles with Gleim and Lea Lebus were also in top form this time and achieved a clear victory.

The strong performance continued in the singles: André Weckwerth in the second men’s singles, Rainer Cazzato in the third men’s singles and Lea Lebus in the women’s singles each clearly won their games in two sets and thus secured the overall victory. Only Pascal Galleinus had to admit defeat again in the first men’s singles, although he showed a strong comeback in the second set and was briefly able to catch up with a deficit of 3:11. In the final mixed, Jonas Lebus and Sally Gleim were unable to put the previous day’s mistakes behind them, despite attractive rallies. They lost in three sets 22:20, 18:21 and 16:21.
In the end there was a deserved 5:3 win for BC Herscheid, which brought important points for the table. Overall, the Herscheiders were able to collect important points with the win against Friedrichsdorf and recover a little from the disappointment of the previous day. Nevertheless, the focus remains on the upcoming games in order to be able to continue playing at the top of the table.
The weekend was less successful for BC Herscheid’s Mini 2 team, the U17 youth. In the home game against BC Herringen, the Herscheid team suffered a clear 6-0 defeat. Even if the team is still at the bottom of the table without winning a point, the season still remains exciting. The next chance for points will be on Saturday, November 23rd, at the away game in Bergkamen.
