Eagles consolidate first place in NFC East with victory over Commanders

The Philadelphia Eagles picked up an important win to start NFL Week 11. In the division duel against the Washington Commanders, head coach Nick Sirianni’s team won 26:18 and thus secured first place in the NFC East ahead of their strongest competitor.

Philadelphia celebrated a hard-fought win against the Commanders, scoring 20 points in the final quarter alone. Once again, running back Saquon Barkley proved to be a guarantee of success. After a rocky start and a few missed opportunities by kicker Jake Elliott, Barkley got the team on the road to victory with a 23-yard touchdown with five minutes left. Shortly thereafter, he scored another 39-yard touchdown after an interception, bringing his total to 146 yards and two touchdowns. Barkley had already reached over 1,000 yards in the first half of the season and once again showed his class as the Eagles’ top rusher and playmaker.

Jayden Daniels, the Commanders’ quarterback and previous favorite for the title of Offensive Rookie of the Year, was not convincing against the Eagles’ strong defense. He now seems to be experiencing the typical rookie moments as it was his second poor performance in a row. The performance of his wide receivers was also disappointing: They only caught four passes for a total of 28 yards, while other top performers like Terry McLaurin remained without contact until deep into the third quarter. In the end, Daniels still managed to score a late touchdown with a successful two-point conversion, but the Commanders’ onside kick was secured by the Eagles, ending the game.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts also got off to a slow start, hitting only a few passes in the first quarter and even having a brief stoppage to be evaluated for a possible concussion due to a sack. However, as the game progressed, he found his rhythm and successfully completed 14 of his last 18 passes in the final three quarters. Hurts’ ability to wear out the Commanders’ defensive line through planned runs ultimately helped turn the game around. With their success, the Eagles are clearly heading towards the playoffs, while the Commanders need to quickly regain their form from the first half of the season.
