These have been hours of hard work for the organizers of the Spanish U23 Badminton Championship, a competition that arrives for the first time in history on the island of Lanzarote, and is organized jointly by the Auria Badminton Club, the Spanish Federation of Badminton and the Canarian Badminton Federation. At the IES Blas Cabrera Felipe, headquarters of the tournament, the four playing courts that host the matches that begin to be played at 3:30 p.m. this Friday are already installed.
54 players are participating in this new edition of the Spanish U23 Badminton Championship, and they compete in the men’s and women’s singles, in the men’s and women’s doubles, and in the mixed doubles. This Friday, the qualifying rounds of the first two rounds will be played, leaving for Saturday the quarterfinals and semifinals, and on Sunday the five grand finals will be held.
In the men’s category, Alejandro Pérez (CB IES La Orden), current runner-up in Spain, starts as the number one seed in the tournament. Gabriel Fernández (CIES) is the number two seed, and Álvaro Morán (CB IES La Orden) is the third seed. The three players will be exempt in the first round of the Spanish U23 Badminton Championship.
The current Spanish runner-up in the under-23 category, Cristina Teruel (Huelva), starts this time as the first seed, and as number two is Ana Caballero (Alicante Intercity), a player who won the medal in the last edition. bronze Amaia Torralba (Club Bádminton Belmecher) and Sonia Martinez (Ciudad de Villalba), share the status of third seeds, and in the first round they will have as rivals Karen Martin and Zoe Varadé, respectively.
Nikol Carulla (AS Pontes Badminton Club) is the current Spanish under-23 champion, both in the individual category and in the women’s doubles. On this occasion, the player is not competing in the women’s individual main draw, but will do so in the women’s doubles with Ana Caballero and the mixed doubles with Rodrigo Sanjurjo (AS Pontes Badminton Club).
Canarian badminton has the participation of three players, such as Adrián Carabali and Graciela Müggler from the Auria Bádminton Club, and Paula Gutiérrez from CB Tenzul El Rosario. Graciela Müggler competes in the women’s doubles with Candela Antequera (Benalmádena) and the mixed doubles with her partner Adrián Carabali. And Paula Gutiérrez competes in the mixed doubles with Alejandro Fojtasek (Benalmádena).
