F1 Brazil GP Qualification Postponed: How Rain and Thunderstorms Impacted the Race Weekend

Qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix race has been postponed until 10:30 am this Sunday (7:30 am local), the FIA announced on Saturday night.

During the afternoon, at 2:30 pm local time (5:30 pm in mainland Portugal), half an hour before the start of the classification, the rain became persistent on the asphalt of the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, in Interlagos (SP). Simultaneously, thunder and lightning forced the pilots to take cover.

Between hours of waiting, the FIA decided to definitively postpone the qualifying session, especially because natural light was scarce at 4:45 pm local time. Furthermore, the weather forecast indicated the persistence of rain.

«The decision was taken due to the lack of visibility. There is a lot of standing water in parts of the circuit, making conditions dangerous. (…) The safety of drivers, team members, volunteers, officials and spectators is our priority», says the FIA statement.

As the qualifying time was changed, the start for the Brazilian GP was brought forward to 3:30 pm in mainland Portugal.

This Saturday, before the rain, Land Norris (McLaren) was first in the sprint race, followed by his colleague Piastri and Leclerc (Ferrari). Remembering that Max Verstappen, from Red Bull, was penalized.
