Did FC Bayern miss the golden opportunity to sign exceptional footballer Florian Wirtz? That is the core question of a dispute between TV expert Lothar Matthäus and the former Munich sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. Matthew says: yes. Salihamidzic counters this and accuses the German record player of lying.
Matthäus reported on the TV show “Sky90” about a “dispute” between the former Bayern coach Hansi Flick and his bosses. Wirtz would have been “available” during Flick’s time at the record champions. But they didn’t want him at Bayern Munich. And Hansi Flick wanted Florian Wirtz.”
When asked who didn’t want the talent, Matthäus said: “Hasan apparently didn’t” and that it “came across that way”. Salihamidzic disagreed. “There was never this argument that Lothar Matthäus is talking about,” he emphasized in the Bild“I also never spoke to Hansi Flick about transferring Wirtz. That’s complete nonsense.” And further: “Lothar, in his role as an expert, should check his sources better before he spreads such baseless rumors and not constantly spread lies about me and FC Bayern.”
Matthew sticks to his presentation. “I know for sure that Hansi wanted to bring the young Florian Wirtz to Bayern when he was 17 and the club did not fulfill his wish. My statements about this were not directed against Hasan,” said Matthäus: “I wanted to say that Hansi always keeps an eye on young players and prefers to work with them. He’s currently proving that again at FC Barcelona.”
