The Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals will feature last year’s champions Canada, runners-up Italy, hosts Spain, and wild card Czech Republic (recommended by the organizer), as well as the preliminary round in April of this year. A total of 12 countries, including Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the United States, will compete to become the world’s number one in a tournament format. The match will consist of two singles matches and one doubles match, with the winner being the first to win two matches.
In the first quarterfinal match, Italy defeated Japan with two wins and one loss. Their opponent will be Poland, which is home to world No. 2 I. Świętek (Poland), who defeated Spain in the first round and the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.
In the first singles match, Italy’s L. Bronzetti (Italy) defeated M. Rinetta (Poland) to win first, but in the second singles match, world No. 4 J. Paolini (Italy) faced Świętek. After a heated set match, they lost, falling to 1 win and 1 loss.
In the final doubles match, Italy introduced the solid pair of Paolini and S. Errani (Italy), who are ranked in the top 10 in the doubles world rankings. Poland also participated in the tournament, with Świętek pairing up with K. Kawa (Poland), but Italy managed to pull through 7-5, 7-5 and advance to the final for the second consecutive year.
Italy will play either Great Britain or Slovakia in the final for the championship.
