FIFA Sanctions Corinthians Over Debt: Implications for Hugo Souza’s Potential Return to Flamengo

FIFA Sanctions Corinthians Over Debt: Implications for Hugo Souza’s Potential Return to Flamengo

Corinthians are prohibited from buying new players in the next three transfer windows

FIFA punished Corinthians this Thursday (31) with a transfer ban after a R$6.9 million debt owed to Balbuena, the team’s former defender. The São Paulo team cannot sign players until the beginning of 2026 and, therefore, Hugo Souza has a chance to return to Flamengo from next season.

Hugo Souza is on loan from Flamengo until the end of the year to Corinthians. Rubro-Negro included a purchase option in the contract if the São Paulo team decides to permanently acquire the goalkeeper. However, as it received punishment from FIFA, Itaquera’s team needs to resolve this issue so as not to lose the archer next season.

FINAL DATE TO BUY HUGO SOUZA

It is worth remembering that Corinthians has until November 30th to exercise the option to purchase Hugo Souza from Flamengo. Furthermore, it is necessary to present bank guarantees to Mais Querido, as there was already a default in the agreement for the sale of Matheuzinho at the beginning of the year.

In this way, Corinthians is racing against time to pay the debt of R$6.9 million to defender Balbuena and, of course, be able to present bank guarantees to Flamengo. Only then, after resolving all pending issues, will the São Paulo team be able to sign Hugo Souza.

FLAMENGO CONTRACT WITH HUGO SOUZA

If he is unable to resolve any pending issues by November 30th, Hugo Souza will return to the Flemish from next season. The archer has a contract with Rubro-Negro until December 31, 2025 and, therefore, would be available to coach Filipe Luís.
