The most remarkable final at the Badminton Open on Sunday in Saarbrücken’s Saarlandhalle was undoubtedly the men’s singles final. Because two brothers, Toma and Christo Popov, met each other.
Christo Popov gegen Toma Popov
The two come from Bulgaria, but now live in France and also play for France. Christo, the younger, is 22 years old, his brother Toma is 26. The two have been playing since childhood, training together and knowing each other’s tactics and strategies exactly.
The decisive factor this afternoon was the form of the day. And here the younger brother appeared fitter. With 21:13 the first set clearly went to Christo. The second set ended even more clearly at 21:10 – the 22-year-old ultimately secured victory.
Two wins go to Denmark
Mia Blichfeldt (Denmark) prevailed in the women’s singles. She defeated Malvika Bansod from India 21:10 and 21:15 in the final. In the mixed doubles, Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund, also from Denmark, won against Alexander Dunn and Julie MacPherson from Scotland in two sets (21:19, 21:16).
The Taiwanese Shuo Yun Sung and Chien Hui Yu won the women’s doubles. They won against Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr from Ukraine (21:16, 21:14). In the men’s doubles, the Danes Rasmus Kjaer and Frederik Søgaard, who also plays for 1. BC Bischmisheim, lost to the top-seeded duo Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. The English won in three sets (18:21, 21:15, 21:18).
Out for Germany in the semi-finals
The tournament was endowed with a total of 120,000 US dollars. Linda Efler and Thuc Nguyen were the last Germans eliminated in the semifinals.
