The club’s usual main sponsor leaves his place for the occasion. The Valencia football club, which has not played its last three matches due to the deadly floods which hit the region two weeks ago, will return to competition on November 23 against Betis Sevilla with a special jersey for the ‘occasion. A completely black tunic “as a sign of mourning for those who died because of the DANA disaster (Spanish name for the meteorological phenomenon)”, indicates the club in a press release this Thursday.
This will be adorned with messages of support, such as “Amunt Valencians” (“Go Valencians”) on the front, “to remind people of the need to help those affected over time and to make solidarity visible, “spirit of resistance and the ability to overcome problems,” explains FC Valencia in a press release.
The jerseys will then be auctioned on the specialized site Matchwornshirt. All profits will be used to finance sporting and educational activities for young people affected by the climate catastrophe. The day before, the club had announced that all ticket revenues from this La Liga match would serve the same cause.
Floods killed at least 224 people in Spain two weeks ago, and 16 people are still missing. On Wednesday, the region was again placed on red weather alert due to heavy rains, but there were no casualties.
Valencia saw its league matches against Real Madrid and Espanyol Barcelona, scheduled for early November, postponed. Their Cup encounter against Parla was also postponed twice.
