Chelsea star Australian striker Sam Kerr and his partner, American international Kristie Mewis, revealed that they were expecting a baby in 2025, triggering a wave of homophobic insults on the internet which the London club strongly condemned on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old captain of the Australian team announced the news on social media, accompanied by photos of the couple, and also revealed an ultrasound. In response, Kerr and Mewis, West Ham midfielder, had to face “unacceptable and hateful homophobic comments”, denounced Chelsea.
“There is no place in society for any form of discrimination and we will not accept any attacks directed against our players, staff or supporters,” the club added in a statement.
The team’s French coach, Sonia Bompastor, said it was “simply unacceptable to have these kinds of comments, especially in 2024,” during a press conference before the Champions League match against Celtic on Wednesday.
