Football: ex-Madrilenian Marcelo leaves Fluminense, angry with the coach

Former Real Madrid star Marcelo, 36, has left Fluminense after falling out with his coach, the Rio de Janeiro club announced on Saturday. “Fluminense and Marcelo terminated the contract by mutual agreement“, we can read in a club press release.

The day before, an altercation had opposed the player and coach Mano Menezes, former Brazil coach (2010-2012), during a match of the Brazilian Championship against Gremio at the Maracana stadium (2-2).

The coach called his player to bring him on in added time of the second period but after a verbal exchange between the two men Marcelo ultimately remained off the field. “I heard something I didn’t like and changed my mind” Menezes explained.

Marcelo returned to his training club in February 2023, after fifteen years spent in Europe. A few months later he won the first Copa Libertadores in the club’s history with Fluminense.

“Manchester United is the biggest downgrading of a club in the 21st century”
