Uruguay’s football legend Diego Forlan received a lesson in his adventure in professional tennis – and was still happy afterwards.
On his debut at the ATP Challenger level in Montevideo, the 45-year-old clearly lost 1:6, 2:6 against Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos from Bolivia in the doubles alongside Federico Coria from Argentina. Forlan started with a wildcard.
“I couldn’t have even imagined that, let alone dreamed it. It’s wonderful to have played against professionals – that takes courage,” said Forlan: “I take a few volleys, a good smash and a few forehands from the rallies with.”
Since the end of his great football career, the former Celeste record player has repeatedly picked up the racket in smaller amateur tournaments and on the senior tour – even as a teenager he was considered a highly talented tennis player. He left it open whether he would compete again at a level below the ATP tour.
