The football match that went best over the weekend was the big match at the Meazza, a match that had very little of “big” about it, both in the result and in the spectacle offered.

A match seen by 1.5 million spectators on DAZN, a number which is much lower than the numbers of previous years, but which is not disfiguring at all if you think about the results of matches such as Verona-Inter, 603,000 spectators or Lazio-Bologna, 464,000 spectators.

It just exceeded one million viewers, thanks to the simultaneous viewing on Sky and DAZN, Naples – Rome, which had 761,000 viewers on DAZN and 553,000 viewers on Sky. The simultaneous presence of the Davis Cup final did not help, 1 million viewers on Sky and 4.5 million free-to-air on Rai 2.

It could be said that a similar result in tennis is predictable, given that it was a free-to-air event, but in recent years, when Sinner was not there, how many would have seen the Davis Cup final?

The spectacle and the champions are still the element that drives sportand the ball traveling at 100 km/h on a tennis court today is more spectacular than 22 people chasing a ball without scoring a goal in one of the most anticipated matches of the season. DAZN is not to blame, but it must still support a business model that would perhaps have been successful if the product sold had been much more attractive also because DAZN is still a showcase, the product for sale is the content.

It is therefore not surprising to find ourselves faced with football promotions which paint a very different reality from that “DAZN is very expensive” of September, when the new price lists with increases were announced. Rock-bottom prices arrive after two monthsin an attempt to increase viewer numbers and improve the numbers.

Last weekend the proposal made by the company to those who canceled in recent months, or to those who no longer subscribed, is one of those to which it is difficult to say no: first 9.99 euros per month for three months without any constraints, then 5.99 euros for three months without constraints. Take it or leave it.

They are 18 euros instead of the 135 euros, or 44.90 euros per month, which are requested with the regular price list. The only precaution to take is to insert a cancellation reminder two months in advance, otherwise you will be charged for an extra month at full price.

The promotion has now expired, but it wasn’t the first that similar offers were made (but we don’t remember them being so low) and it won’t be the last: to keep up for five years the numbers have to go up, otherwise the dealer will go bust, and 5.99 euros a month is a fantastic way to recover a few hundred thousand users with a major downside, getting the idea into the fan’s mind that that is the right price to pay to watch football. Perhaps, given Milan – Juve on Sunday, he wouldn’t even be completely wrong.
