Werder Bremen, four-time German football champion, has decided to withdraw from the social network
“Since Elon Musk took over the platform, under the guise of free speech, hate speech, hatred against minorities, far-right messages and conspiracy theories have increased at an incredible rate,” explained Werder Bremen in a press release.
“The radicalization of the platform is driven by Elon Musk himself and his posts. He notably made transphobic and anti-Semitic comments and spread conspiracy stories,” insisted the club from northern Germany, crowned champion four times (1965, 1988, 1993 and 2004).
“Almost nothing is sanctioned on the platform anymore. The algorithms and control of the X platform are completely opaque. Furthermore, Elon Musk is using the network to turn it into a political weapon, as we saw recently during the American electoral campaign,” said Werder.
The club, which “clearly positions itself against hatred, discrimination and exclusion”, and for “diversity, freedom and democracy, cohesion and solidarity within society”, decides to withdraw from , and asks his 6,000,000 subscribers to now follow him on the Bluesky social network.
Werder Bremen made a decision identical to that announced a few days earlier by Sankt Pauli, a Hamburg club which is playing in the Bundesliga this season and which has 250,000 subscribers on X.
The German Ski Federation (DSV) left the social network Twitter in November 2022, a few weeks after the conclusion of the takeover by Elon Musk. The German Volleyball Federation had also stopped its activities on X since March 2024.
