The Formula 1 championship will welcome an eleventh team on its starting grid in 2026, the GM/Cadillac team, the organizers announced this Monday, referring to “an agreement on this principle” with the American automobile giant.
GM’s application was validated by “an agreement in principle” concluded following a long process of discussions between the two parties which made it possible to establish “the viability of participation following the commercial evaluation and the decision taken by Formula 1 in January 2024,” said a Formula 1 press release.
“During this year, they reached operational milestones and clearly expressed their commitment to giving the eleventh team the name GM/Cadillac,” underlines F1.
In addition to the arrival of the American automobile giant in the premier motorsport competition, F1 also plans to “bring in GM as an engine supplier at a later date”.
The American manufacturer announced last year that it had registered with the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to be an engine supplier in Formula 1 from 2028, offering support to the candidacy of Michael Andretti, son of the champion of the F1 world 1978 Mario Andretti, to join the championship.
In January 2023, the FIA launched a process allowing potential new participants to join the championship from 2025 or 2026.
