From Badminton champ to IPS officer: DGP’s daughter triumphs over injury to serve nation
The bond between a father and daughter is often characterized by admiration and influence, as exemplified by Kuhoo Garg, an IPS officer and accomplished badminton player.

Her father, former Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar, has played a pivotal role in shaping her path. Kuhoo has amassed over 17 medals in national and international badminton competitions, showcasing her athletic prowess alongside her academic achievements.

Recently, Kuhoo secured the 178th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2023. She began her badminton journey at the age of 9-10, encouraged by her parents, both of whom were passionate about sports.

Following her success in the UPSC exam, Kuhoo joined the Indian Police Service, motivated by her father’s example of public service and her own desire to make a difference in people’s lives.

Educational background and athletic achievements

Kuhoo Garg’s education journey took her across various cities due to her father’s transferable job.

She completed her early education at St. Joseph School in Dehradun, later attending Sanskriti School in Delhi from 8th to 12th grade.

In 2018, she earned an Economics Honors degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), one of Delhi University’s premier institutions, where she formed lasting friendships.

In the realm of sports, Kuhoo has represented India in badminton, winning numerous accolades.

According to her father, she is the first player to pass the UPSC exam while actively competing for Team India, marking a significant achievement in her career.

Kuhoo trained under renowned coaches, including Dr. DK Sen and Gopichand, Saina Nehwal’s coach.

Notable achievements include winning a silver medal at the National Championship in 2019 and a gold medal at the 2019 South Asian Games.

Resilience and focus

Kuhoo’s journey has not been without challenges.

After suffering a significant injury that required surgery, she spent a year on bed rest.

During this time, she focused on preparing for the UPSC exam, with the support of her friend Narayani Bhatia, who secured the 45th rank in the same examination and is now an IAS officer in the UP cadre.
