FIFA President Gianni Infantino congratulated the Hungarian Football Association and praised the efforts made to commemorate football legend Ferenc Puskas by opening a “private museum” dedicated to his football career in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, coinciding with an occasion commemorating one of his most important matches.

Puskas is undisputedly considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, and he was a star Golden team Hungarian, and he and his comrades are still respected and revered in this central European country to this day.

The Hungarian National Stadium was opened in 2019, and kept the name Puskas after his predecessor. The building located on the site of the stadium currently includes a museum that documents Puskas’ life from his childhood in Budapest until his rise to become one of the best football players in history.

Puskas won five Hungarian League titles with Budapest Honvéd before moving to Real Madrid in 1958, where he won five Spanish League titles and three European Champion Clubs Cup titles – the previous name of the current Champions League, wearing the famous white shirt of the Spanish team.

Puskas achieved a record by scoring 84 goals in only 85 international matches with his country, and he also won the gold medal in the 1952 Olympic Games in Finland. In 2009, he created FIFA FIFA Puskas Awardwhich – until this year – was awarded to the best goal scorer in any league anywhere in the world. As of The Best of FIFA™ Awards 2024, the Puskas Award will be awarded to the best goal in men’s football globally.

“I congratulate you on the effort made to commemorate football legend Ferenz Puskas through this distinguished museum,” Mr. Infantino said of the “fast Hungarian giant,” who passed away in 2006. On this 70th anniversary of the great Hungarian team reaching the final of the 1954 FIFA World Cup, more than ever we must honor the legacy of the legendary player Ferenc Puskas and appreciate his great contributions to the world of football.

“We do this every year at FIFA, where the best goal of each year receives the Puskas Award, and on April 1, 2027, we will celebrate the centenary of his birth, which is a very important date in the history of world football. Puskas left a great legacy for those who watched him play and score goals in a shirt.” Honvéd or Real Madrid. Indeed, this player’s brilliance was more evident at the international level, especially during his career with the Hungarian national team, which is considered one of the most distinguished and legendary teams in the history of our sport.

The great Hungarian team, in which Puskas starred, did not have the honor of lifting the FIFAÔ World Cup, as it suffered a painful loss to West Germany in the final of the World Cup in Bern in Switzerland in 1954. Despite this, they dominated the football scene in the 1950s, and presented exceptional performances, most notably on November 25. November 1953 at Wembley Stadium, where they achieved a historic achievement as the first European continental team to win on English soil.

“In fact, exactly 71 years ago, Hungary defeated England 6-3 in Wembley, in a match that left a profound impact on the course of world football. The museum houses a wonderful art exhibition that commemorates the exploits of this team and its historical status that will remain firmly established in the hearts of Hungarian football fans until now. Forever.

I was very pleased to visit the Puskas Arena in 2021 and see the name of a world football star being honored in this world-class sporting edifice. Today, with only part of the old National Stadium remaining, you have a world-class museum to celebrate your proud football heritage. I would like to congratulate you all, and I look forward to visiting him very soon.”
