The Edmonton Oilers suffered a defeat in the NHL despite another strong performance by Leon Draisaitl. The German ice hockey star scored against the Toronto Maple Leafs 89 seconds before the end to equalize 3:3, but the previous season’s Stanley Cup finalists had to admit defeat 3:4 in overtime.
Cologne’s Draisaitl also contributed an assist to Connor McDavid’s 2-1 win. Draisaitl scored two points in each of the last four games. Overall, the 29-year-old has 13 goals and eleven assists in 18 games this season. The Canadians were worried about Darnell Nurse. The Oilers defenseman had to leave the ice bleeding in the second period after a severe check to the head and was unable to return.
The other Germans also lost with their teams. Tim Stützle had no chance with the Ottawa Senators when they lost 4-0 to the in-form Carolina Hurricanes (ten wins from the last twelve games). John-Jason Peterka was involved in at least one goal for the Buffalo Sabers for the sixth game in a row, but his assist was not enough in the 2:5 defeat at the Philadelphia Flyers.
Basketball: Lakers continue to win – Kleber ends negative series
The Los Angeles Lakers continue to make progress in the NBA. Led by the two basketball stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Californians won 104:99 at the New Orleans Pelicans and thus achieved their fifth win in a row. The Lakers moved up to fourth place in the Western Conference.
James scored 21 points, including two important three-pointers in the final phase, as well as seven rebounds and five assists. This time, however, the 39-year-old was unable to achieve a triple-double, as he did four times in a row. Davis was almost unstoppable with 31 points and 14 rebounds. As in the previous two games, world champion Daniel Theis did not play for the Pelicans.
Maximilian Kleber won again with the Dallas Mavericks after four defeats in a row. In the 110:93 win against the San Antonio Spurs, Würzburg had two points and four rebounds as a starter. The best throwers for the Mavs were Kyrie Irving (22) and Luka Doncic (16). The Spurs had to do without super talent Victor Wembanyama, the Frenchman was out with a knee injury.
Ice hockey: Seider on million dollar contract: “Surreal feeling”
NHL professional Moritz Seider is aware of the significance of his new mega contract with the Detroit Red Wings. “I would never have dreamed that I would one day be talking about such sums, and over such lengths. Of course, a childhood dream came true somewhere and now you no longer have to worry financially,” said the defender of the German Press Agency.
“Before, you were already doing really well and you could invite your friends to dinner, you were able to do a lot of good things for the family and now you just know that mom, dad, my brother, my grandparents and my children don’t have any worries to make money when everything goes well. “It’s definitely a surreal feeling,” said the 23-year-old, who once played for Adler Mannheim.
Seider signed a new contract before the season and tied himself to the NHL team from the US state of Michigan until 2031. According to the Red Wings, he will earn $8.55 million (around €7.6 million) per year. In total, the former man from Mannheim collected the equivalent of around 53.6 million euros in seven years.
“But of course hunger doesn’t stop and you have higher demands and of course you want to meet them,” emphasized Seider. He is one of the most important players in the squad and was voted the league’s best rookie in his first NHL season.
