In recent years the technology has become increasingly popular in our lives. Now there isn’t a single aspect where there isn’t the influence of something even remotely smart. On the one hand, this has undoubtedly made many things easier, but on the other, it exposes us every day to dangers that many, unfortunately, ignore. In fact, in many cases, thieves have discarded the classic balaclava to take action with a PC.
Every year the Postal Police receives many reports of online scams which inevitably also involve the car market. Phantom cars sold at rock-bottom prices that don’t exist, fake insurance and much more. For this reason it is good for everyone to keep their eyes wide open to this type of situation. The American baseball player knows something about it Kris Bryantwho became, despite himself, the protagonist of an unpleasant episode of online scam.
An ingenious plan
The boy, who plays in the Colorado Rockieshad his stolen Lamborghini Huracan in a very particular way. He usually lives in Las Vegas for some periods of the year, which pushes him to bring some of his cars with him. On this occasion, as he had done in the past, he commissioned a transport company to pick up his 2023 Huracan in Sin City. The problem, however, is that that car, at that point, literally disappeared into thin air. The 32-year-old was thus forced to report her disappearance.
The police immediately investigated the incident and it turned out that the transport company had suffered a compromise of its company email. Thanks to this sophisticated plan the bad guys have forged the address destination by having the vehicle delivered to another address in Las Vegas. A plan hatched down to the smallest details or almost, which led these criminal hackers to take possession of Bryant’s Lamborghini Huracan.
How it ended
The Police, using the network of cameras dispersed throughout the city, managed to reconstruct the entire route of the truck transporting the car thanks to the license plate recognition. A week after the incident, investigators arrested several suspects and above all recovered 2 other cars which were found to be stolen and which had false registration documents. This particular story has gone around the world in a short time, but it certainly teaches us that IT security it becomes a fundamental trait to take into consideration for every single person, but also for every company.
Of course these criminals always invent a new one. Let’s remember that just a few months ago even Ferrari was targeted. At that moment, thanks to the use of deepfakes, CEO Vigna’s voice was reproduced perfectly. A story from a Spielberg film which involved a manager from Maranello, contacted by this artificial intelligence to try to extort top secret information on the Prancing Horse. At that moment, however, a very specific question asked by the victim to the AI had thwarted what could have turned out to be a nasty scam. The advice is always not to give sensitive information through messages or phone calls and to always make sure that you are talking to the chosen person. Fortunately, AI, at least at the moment, is not capable of perfectly replicating human interactions.
