HISTORY OF THE GUADELOUPE JUDO LEAGUE
In Guadeloupe, judo was introduced in 1950 by a doctor named ARNAUD. It was in 1956 that the first judo club was founded, by Pierre CANACCINI. Until 1983, the year of his death, he fought to make the practice of judo accessible to all Guadeloupeans. The development of the discipline was his work and as a result, he is considered to be the “Marian art father” of judo in Guadeloupe.
During the 1970s, a departmental committee brought together Guadeloupe and Martinique and also other “assimilated disciplines”. This committee was represented by Paul GRESSE
for Guadeloupe. It was the division of disciplines in the mainland that led to the creation of the Judo League and the Karate League in the West Indies, with the addition of a division
geographical.
