With the elimination in the South American Championship, Corinthians‘ chances of competing in the next Copa do Brasil are slim. Timão did not qualify for the tournament through Paulistão and did not guarantee a place in the Libertadores through Brasileirão. The only remaining possibility would be to win the Copa Paulista.

The tournament, organized by the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), guarantees the choice between a place in Series D of the Brasileirão and a place in the Copa do Brasil for the champion. The Copa Paulista takes place between June and October and includes clubs that do not have a national calendar.

No vacancy in 2025
The tournament’s competition formula guarantees a place for the top eight in the general classifications of Paulistão Série A1, Série A2, Série A3 and Série A4. To avoid missing out on competing in the Copa do Brasil for two consecutive years, Corinthians could see this competition as another chance to qualify for the national competition.
Timão finished this season’s Campeonato Paulista in tenth place and, therefore, did not guarantee direct qualification for the Copa do Brasil. The black and white club can still compete in the Copa Paulista if any qualified team withdraws from participating.
Timon refused
Corinthians could have competed in this year’s Copa Paulista, won by Monte Azul, by reaching the quarterfinals of the state in 2023, when they were eliminated by Ituano.
This year, Monte Azul chose to compete in next year’s Series D. Votuporanguense will play in the Copa do Brasil.
Last place in the CBF ranking guarantees place in the Copa do Brasil
Even with their place secured, Corinthians chose not to compete in the Copa Paulista this year. Like other clubs with a national calendar, Timão preferred not to take on any more commitments in a season overloaded with Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil and Sudamericana games.

Other years
The competition in this format was introduced into the state calendar in 2008. Previously, the FPF organized knockout game tournaments sporadically, without frequency.
Corinthians participated in the 2011 and 2019 editions. In both, the club fielded youth teams, and the games were not even played in Timão’s main stadiums in the Brasileirão, such as Pacaembu and Neo Química Arena.
Both in 2011 and 2019, Corinthians were eliminated in the first phase of the Copa Paulista.
