How FIA’s Controversial Decisions Could Cost Verstappen the Race: Examining the Shady Tactics of Race Stewards

It is increasingly becoming an extremely special weekend in Brazil due to the weather conditions in São Paulo. On Sunday, when the drivers return to the circuit, we will have to wait and see how the day will go. In the worst case, Max Verstappen could even start the race from P20. His fate lies in the hands of these stewards.

For the time being, the Grand Prix weekend in Brazil can be called quite special. We drive according to the sprint race format, which means that the drivers would actually start qualifying on Saturday after the sprint race. However, the weather conditions at the Interlagos circuit were so dramatic that the session was postponed several times. Ultimately, the stewards came to the conclusion that it was far too wet to race and decided to move qualifying to the early Brazilian morning – around 7:30 am local time to be precise.

However, even on Sunday morning it is still questionable whether qualifying can take place because heavy rainfall is again expected. If the drivers are unable to get onto the track again, it means that we can no longer qualify and a different starting grid for the race will have to be determined. In that case, the fate of the drivers and Verstappen in particular lies in the hands of the stewards, who have already had so much to do in recent weeks. In that case – due to the rules that are not yet completely clear this year – one can go in several directions. From 2025 onwards, in such a case, the World Cup standings must be used as the starting lineup. A logical option, but not yet the case.
