How the cooperation model between schools and clubs works in the Main-Spessart district

Our media company asked the head of the Bavarian State Office for Schools/State Office for School Sports, Achim Engelking. The former middle school teacher, who grew up in Lohr, last campaigned with a team from the “Bayern Tour School and Club” event series in Karlstadt two years ago. “The sports working groups have been very stable since 2022,” said Engelking’s message. Across Bavaria, the Main-Spessart district is in sixth place with 20 cross-school SAGs, mostly with two schools that offer their children and young people additional joint sports.

Currently, 14 clubs in the district – from TSV Lohr, TV Marktheidenfeld, TSV and FV Karlstadt to FV Seifriedsburg or the youth football community (JFG) Spessarttor Lohr – work together with a total of 22 schools. “Cooperation at primary, middle and secondary schools as well as high schools with the clubs has increased,” says Engelking. Since some schools have several SAGs, there are actually 87 collaborations – 85 of which are SAGs with both a grassroots and competitive sports focus; In addition, there are two purely performance-oriented cycling bases: the high school with the TSV Karlstadt and the Gemündener high school with the Viktoria Wombach cycling association.

For example, the secondary school and high school in Karlstadt, the Gemünden high school and the state secondary school there, the Gemünden primary school and the Gräfendorf primary school, or the JFG cooperate with the secondary and middle school and the Lohr secondary school. TSV Lohr offers a whole range of sports – from badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, handball and judo to athletics. The local TSV also does a lot in Karlstadt: there are SAGs in basketball, gymnastics, handball, judo, athletics, cycling, tennis and table tennis, as well as a new inclusion SAG with the high school and the Leo Weismantel support center. The DJK Karbach, as a volleyball stronghold, offers this sport for the local primary school SAG.

Since 2013, there has been a football inclusion group with children from the St. Nikolaus School, the middle and secondary schools as well as the Marktheidenfeld high school, in which Burkhard Wagner is involved as a teacher at the support center, trainer and chairman of TV Marktheidenfeld. “Word has gotten around and 30 children and young people between the ages of eleven and 15 are currently training on Mondays. And every year we have a waiting list,” says Wagner.

Schools and clubs cooperate closely with each other and agree on what can be offered. The students do not have to, but are allowed to, be in the club. The guideline number for a SAG after class: ten students from different years and certainly from different schools. The advantage for the children in the SAG: They can try out a sport at school free of charge for a year and are also insured like with school sports. The clubs also benefit because this makes it easier for them to attract members. The best example: TV Marktheidenfeld. He has registered two girls’ soccer teams – a positive development from the SAG.

The clubs had to submit their applications for financial support with the school principal’s confirmation by October 31st. The respective flat rates are paid to the club once per school year.

Background: Bavarian cooperation model “Sport-nach-1 in schools and clubs”

Since 1991, “Sport-nach-1 in schools and clubs” has been a successful model throughout Bavaria and in all types of schools. Within this framework, the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture, the Bavarian State Sports Association and the Bavarian Sports Shooting Association work together to provide a qualified, voluntary afternoon offer that complements physical education lessons – in over 80 sports.

“Sport-nach-1” offers added value to everyone involved: for students, the offers are an incentive to engage in sports, for schools an opportunity to build a profile and for clubs an opportunity to spot talent and recruit members. There are over 3,300 collaborations in Bavaria in the current school year.

The “Sport after 1” model essentially consists of two pillars: sports working groups geared toward popular sports and bases geared towards competitive sports. Both forms of cooperation are supported by the Ministry of Culture using different models. (Source: Ministry of Culture)
