How two East Tyroleans are making the sport of judo better known

Throwing the opponent onto their back in a controlled manner by using a technique with strength and speed: This is the simply explained principle of the Japanese martial art judo, which is practiced in over 150 countries and is therefore the most widespread martial art in the world.

Two people who are ensuring that the sport of judo becomes better known in their homeland are the East Tyrolean judoka Manuel Wiesler (33) and Gabriel Bretschneider (23), who fight in the 2nd Austrian Bundesliga. Three years ago he realized Union Judo Club Dornbirn the talent of the two matreians and signed them. While Wiesler is one of the most experienced fighters, Bretschneider can always be relied on to deliver points.

Medal at state championships

This year the judo team managed to secure fourth place in the table. Bretschneider left the mat as the winner a total of six times, with the nine-time Tyrolean champion and two-time U23 runner-up also facing the world number three juniors in the 81 kilogram and 90 kilogram classes. The 23-year-old also fought for the first time on the world tour at the European Open in Estonia in August.

This year was also extremely successful for teammate Wiesler. In addition to his voluntary work as a trainer for the advanced and competition group Judo Union Raiffeisen Osttirolwhich he does three times a week and accompanies his protégés to fights on weekends, he was able to secure the bronze medal at the state championships. Both Wiesler and Bretschneider are still members of the Judo Union Raika Osttirol.
