The vice president of Inter Javier Zanettiwho spoke during the talk at the Salone dei Cinquecento in Florence as part of the ‘Fair Play Menarini – The champions tell their stories’ award ceremony, told us what these many years spent in Italy have left him: “The best thing is the respect from everyone that I received when I stopped. I will never forget Paolo Maldini saying that I was loyal. I fell in love with Inter from the first day at Appiano Gentile. They were there Ottavio Bianchi and Massimo Moratti. I went from Banfield to Inter and it changed my life. My mother was a housewife and my father was a bricklayer, we were a humble family where we lacked nothing, but in Argentina it was a difficult period, my brother and I were studying. We grew up with those values that have accompanied me and will accompany me throughout my life.”
Zanetti continues: “Working with my father was one of the best moments: I played for Independiente but they told me that I was no longer part of it and I started working with my father for a year. Then he told me to try football again and those words were impulsive. Then I passed the tryout for another team, I met my wife who played basketball and we grew up together.” He comments on the evening of his farewell to football: “I was 41 years old, I gave everything and that evening was very emotional. 20 years at Inter passed in a flash, with which I will always have a very strong bond. I couldn’t ask for more from football.”
