The collaboration only lasted a year.

IFK Göteborg announces that they are breaking up with Västra Frölunda.

“There have been challenges in matching the expectations and conditions of both associations,” the club writes on its website.

It was before the 2024 season that IFK Gothenburg and Västra Frölunda began a sporting collaboration. The agreement was signed over two years and the collaboration would apply to the loan of players as well as the exchange of knowledge and experience on the leadership side.

From Blåvitt’s point of view, the hope was to “lower the threshold” for young players when they have to make the step from youth activities to the A team.

But before the season is over, the clubs now announce that the collaboration is ending prematurely. The decision was made jointly after an evaluation, writes IFK Göteborg on its website.

“Higher up in the series system”

“IFK Göteborg takes a positive view of the fact that many young blue-and-white players have been given a match and training environment to develop in, and we take lessons with us when we now evaluate which path we should take going forward to find the best bridge between the academy and the A-team”, writes the club.

Västra Frölunda is housed in division 2 Västra Götaland. They finished sixth in the main round of the series and have no chance to step up to first. Their location is one of the reasons why the cooperation is broken.

– It has worked well this year. But I think we need a partner higher up in the series systems as we develop. It has been good, but next year it needs to be better. We hope so anyway. It could also be about reviving the U21 series, says technical director Ola Larsson to the Football Channel.

Difficulties encountered

Larsson also says that he has nothing negative to say about VF, even though there were difficulties during the year.

– It’s really about the fact that there are two long-standing associations that have different thoughts and opinions on various daily and sporting issues. What we have realized was that maybe we were not mature together. There were excellent thoughts and visions with the collaboration, but unfortunately we have not reached all the way, he says.

IFK Gothenburg is eleventh in the Allsvenskan after 29 rounds. In the last match of the season, they face Mjällby away.
