It may be early in the college basketball season, but this could easily rank as one of the most bizarre moments in sports this year.
During a game between university men’s basketball teams at Jackson State University in Kentucky, a player threw a shoe at an opponent during the game.
After scoring a bucket for his Jackson State team, Tigers forward Dylan Canoville lost his shoe on his way down from the basket.
Kentucky quickly inbounded the ball and began sprinting down the court toward their own basket to take advantage of Canoville’s missing shoe.
But Canoville, in his quick thinking (or not at all), decided to throw his shoe at a ball dribbling by Kentucky forward Brandon Garrison.
The shoe missed the ball completely and Garrison was able to slam it home before turning away in confusion, mouthing ‘What is this?’
Jackson State’s Dylan Canoville (right, dark jersey) throws his shoe at the ball.
Kentucky forward Brandon Garrison opened his mouth in confusion. ‘what’s this?’
Canoville shot 2-of-6 from the field on the night and finished with a final performance of seven points, six rebounds and two steals.
Garrison wasn’t much better, going 3-of-7 from the field and 0-of-2 from beyond the arc to finish with six points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks.
Fortunately for Garrison, Jackson State lost to Kentucky in Lexington 108-59.
The Wildcats were led by Dayton transfer Koby Brea. Koby Brea came off the bench and dropped 22 points in 23 minutes. Other significant contributors included Otega Oweh, who had 21 points, one rebound, two assists and three steals.
As a team, Jackson State was completely outclassed, shooting 33% from the field and 19% from beyond the arc.
No. 9 Kentucky is in its first season under coach Mark Pope after longtime coach John Calipari left for Arkansas in the offseason. They host Western Kentucky next week.
