“It’s a shame what’s happening to tennis.”

Yevgeny Kafelnikov is known for often taking a stand on the hot topics of the day. He was, of course, reacting to the doping case of Iga Swiatek, who was banned for a month after trimetazidine contamination.

The Russian, former winner of the Australian Open and French Open, ironized the situation on his X account before drawing a strong conclusion about the somewhat tarnished reputation of tennis today:

“Sometimes I ask myself, ‘Why the hell didn’t I use steroids during my career so that instead of playing 170 matches in a year, I could maybe play 300?’

It’s really a shame what’s happening in tennis right now.”

2024 will indeed remain a very special year, with the two world number one players (Swiatek leading the WTA rankings at the time of their test) on the men’s and women’s tours testing positive.
