The Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals will feature last year’s winner Canada, runner-up Italy, host country Spain, and wild card Czech Republic (recommended by the organizer), as well as the preliminary round in April of this year. A total of 12 countries, including Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the United States, will compete to become the world’s number one in a tournament format. The match will consist of two singles matches and one doubles match, with the winner being the first to win two matches.
Japan, ranked 15th in the world, defeated Romania, ranked 11th in the first round, with two wins and one loss, advancing to the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Italy, the third-placed powerhouse, was exempted from the first round due to seeding, and this will be their first match.
In the first match, Eina Shibahara, ranked 135th in the world, defeated Erina Cociaretto (Italy), ranked 54th, to advance to the final four, but in the second match, Moeka Uchijima, ranked 56th in the world, He lost to Paolini, who was ranked 4th, and entered the third doubles match with a record of 1 win and 1 loss.
In the first set of the third match, both pairs got one break each, but in the sixth game, Aoyama and Hozumi allowed a second break and were ahead.
In the second set, Aoyama and Hozumi were unable to stop their opponent’s momentum and allowed a break in the first game, followed by another break in the fifth game. Aoyama and Hozumi, who got a break once in the 8th game but were unable to catch up, lost in straight sets, and Japan was eliminated from the quarterfinals with 1 win and 2 losses.
This was the ninth game and first loss for Coach Sugiyama, who has been in charge of the Japan national team since last year.
Furthermore, Japan was aiming to match the top four in 1996 for the first time in 28 years, which would be their best result in a national competition, but their success was put on hold.
Italy, who won, will face either the Czech Republic or Poland in the semi-finals to advance to the finals for the second consecutive year.
