Joao Pereira succeeds Amorim as coach of Sporting CP

The 40-year-old technician was until now the reserve coach of the Lisbon club.

The Portuguese Joao Pereira was appointed Monday as coach of Sporting Portugal, where he led the reserve team, succeeding Ruben Amorim, who left for Manchester United, the Lisbon club announced in a press release.

Joao Pereira, 40, is a former international who trained at Benfica Lisbon but also played for Sporting. He began his coaching career at the same Sporting club, reigning Portuguese champion and current leader of the standings with six points ahead of FC Porto.

Ruben Amorim is expected in Manchester after winning his last match with Sporting at Braga (4-2) on Sunday in the league. Last Tuesday, the Lisbon club won at home in the Champions League against Manchester City (4-1). Amorim has signed with Manchester United until June 2027, with an additional year as an option, replacing Erik ten Hag, who was sacked after a poor start to the season.
