It was an extraordinarily hard piece of work for Coco Baur, but the judoka from Leonberg fought back against many odds and won the bronze medal at the European Cup in Slovenia.

After a first place at a small tournament in Eisenach and second place at the South German Women’s Championships, Coco Baur competed in the U18 European Cup in Koper/Slovenia after suffering a serious elbow injury. In total, judoka from 26 nations with over 500 participants took part. In the category up to 70 kilograms, Coco Baur initially had to deal with Anja Smiljic from Bosnia-Herzegovina, who threw her onto her back with an inner thigh throw. The duel with friend Alica Thiele from Potsdam went into extra time, where Thiele celebrated after a shoulder throw.

Victories in the consolation round

Since the Potsdam native became pool winner, Coco Baur was allowed into the consolation round – and she performed extremely well. Dutchwoman Nikki Heming was quickly defeated by the 18-year-old. There was a lot of excitement in the hall against Vida Hudika from Croatia – but the Leonberg native didn’t let herself be upset in the bitter fight, which was accompanied by controversial scores. Finally, Baur countered a weak attack from the Croatian and got the second score, which led to victory.

With the clear victory over the Pole Roksana Zys, Coco Baur reached the small final for bronze, where she defeated her opponent Korina Dzidiz from Bosnia and Herzegovina with a back-and-forth combination after 90 seconds and was able to celebrate the bronze medal.
