They reached the continental podium Giuseppe De Tulliogold in the 66 kg, Federico Ninfo, silver in the 66, Giulia Ghiglionesilver in the 48, Asia Avanzato, bronze in the 48 and Carlotta Avanzato, bronze in the 63.

“Today I saw a truly beautiful Italy impose itself on the rest of Europe – said the Italian coach Francesco Bruyere – with a lot of determination and a lot of good technique. I can only congratulate all these guys, their teachers and their clubs, well done everyone.”

De Tullio beats Ninfo in an all-Italian final

In fact, it was Bruyere himself who anticipated upon leaving for Pila that this is a “very competitive team with great chances of a medal”. No sooner said than done: the medals arrived, immediately numerous, with a gripping all-Italian final in the 66 kg, two Italians on the podium in the 48 kg and again with the Avanzato sisters as protagonists.

“I dedicate this medal to my family and to my uncle, Michele Iacovazzi, who in all these years have been helping me achieve great goals, as well as the Nippon Club Napoli”, commented Giuseppe De Tullio with the gold around his neck.

Asia Avanzato: “I felt I could win gold, but I remain proud”

“I’m really happy with how this match went,” declared Asia Avanzato after third place, adding that she “got onto the tatami focused and determined. Match after match I became more and more aware of my potential, I’m very sorry for the semi-final because I felt capable of winning and being able to go and fight in the final for the gold. Despite this, I am proud of myself and how I faced this race, I will continue to work consistently to achieve bigger goals.” Carlotta Avanzato, Asia’s sister, also achieved bronze in her category. “Today I didn’t feel in top shape – said Carlotta – but I’m happy I reacted and got the medal. I wanted to win and I certainly could have done much better, but I am convinced that I am on the right path. The thing that makes me happiest today is that my sister also managed to win a nice bronze, with an amazing race.” Finally, one step away from gold, Giulia Ghiglione: “Today’s goal was obviously the gold medal, so this silver leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.”
