The 34-year-old former world No. 4 Nishikori defeated No. 3 seed M. Fucsovics (Hungary) in the first round and world No. 146 L. Klein (Slovakia) in the second round, both in full sets. He advanced to the quarterfinals.
In the first set of the quarterfinals, where he faced 32-year-old Restienne, Nishikori grabbed a break point in the eighth game, with both players breaking twice, and he ended up hitting a backhand winner for the third time.
