AZ lost 3-2 at Feyenoord on Saturday evening, leaving them without a win for the seventh game in a row in all competitions. Nevertheless, Sven Mijnans is proud of his team, he says after the game ESPN.
“I think we fought very hard with each other,” Mijnans begins. “We had a very good plan in the first half, where we were able to put good pressure on them. As a result, they sometimes had enormous doubts.”
“We won a lot of matches in midfield, which allowed us to continue playing football. After that, we often lost the ball a little too quickly, which meant we couldn’t really get the ball into the game in the first half. You have to capitalize on the few moments that you get through. You know that you are not going to get a lot of opportunities in De Kuip, so you have to take advantage of them.”
AZ’s last victory was on September 25, when they won 3-2 against IF Elfsborg. Then they lost to FC Utrecht, Athletic Club, Fortuna Sittard, PSV, Tottenham Hotspur, drew against Go Ahead Eagles and now lost again to Feyenoord.
“Of course something has to be done,” Mijnans responds to AZ’s disappointing series. “We just have to look at each other very critically, but above all, we all have to keep moving forward.”
“I think there was a real team today, and we worked really hard. That was different from the weeks before. I’m proud of the team. But the details have to be better, because that’s how you lose this match.”
Kenneth Perez response
After the interview with Mijnans, we switch back to the studio The Grandstandwhere Kenneth Perez sits at the table as an analyst. He is critical of Mijnans’ use of the word ‘proud’.
“I always think that ‘proud’… You’re proud of everything. I quite like the word ‘proud’… If I am proud of my children, they really have something… What could be more than pride? You have just failed to win seven games in a row, five of which were in the Eredivisie. Then you have worked hard, but that is not something to be proud of, is it? That is the minimum,” said Perez.
