A timely intervention by the police averted a possible brawl in Portici yesterday evening. Two minors were reported for possession of improper weapons after being found in possession of an iron baseball bat and a nozzle, tools that could have turned a confrontation between groups of young people into a tragedy.
Police intervention
The episode occurred around 9pm in Piazza Poli, a well-known Saturday evening meeting place for young people from Portici and neighboring towns. The presence of the local police initially prevented two groups of boys from getting into a physical fight. However, some witnesses reported that two young people involved in the dispute had walked away in the direction of Via Poli, one of whom was holding a baseball bat.
The policemen from the Portici-Ercolano police station, who intervened on the spot, started a reconnaissance and tracked down the two young people described by the witnesses, one of whom was wearing a white sweatshirt.
The escape attempt and the kidnapping
At the sight of the police car, the two boys tried to flee, leaving the baseball bat and the hat on the ground. The officers promptly stopped them and took them to the office.
