New York.-The Dominican right-hander of the Yankees, Luis Gil, and the right-hander of the Pirates, Paul Skenes, were recognized as the 2024 Rookies of the Year by Baseball Digest magazine.
Gil, who had a memorable month of May to start his campaign in the Big League, won said award in the American League. For his part, Skenes, who less than a year after being chosen first overall in the MLB Draft as a sensation flamethrower, was chosen in the National League.
An 11-member panel determined the winners through independent votes.
The group was made up of writers and broadcasters, including MLB.com’s Jim Callis, Jonathan Mayo and Jordan Bastian. Each candidate received three points for each first place vote, two for second and one for third place.
Both contests were close, with Gil edging out Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser by four points (Gil amassed six first-place votes, Cowser received three and A’s closer Mason Miller received two).
Skenes led Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill by seven points (Skenes received nine first-place points and Merrill two).
Gil was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 29 starts (151.2 innings) for New York. In May, the 26-year-old from Dominican Republic made six starts and amazed everyone by recording a 0.70 earned run average in 38.2 innings. He struck out 44 and walked 12 during that period.
In 17 of his 29 starts, Gil did not give up more than one run.
Spectacular
– Amazing
According to historian Elias Sports Bureau, Gil’s 17 outings without allowing more than one run are the second-most by a rookie in major league history, behind George McQuillan of the Phillies with 21.
