Luis Tiant on Hall of Fame classical era committee’s list of candidates

Luis Tiant, the former MLB pitcher who died less than a month ago, is one of the nominees to be part of the Hall of Fame. His name, along with 7 other former players, is part of the list of candidates for the classic era committee of this emblematic space.

The news was given by the league, which also explains that the committee members will meet on December 8 in Dallas. There will be an exhaustive analysis of the contributions made by players, managers and others.

There will be 16 voters who will participate and their names will be known days before the meeting. The candidates need 75% support in the vote, and if they achieve this, they will be inducted on July 27, 2025.

Tiant debuted in the best baseball league in the world on July 19, 1964 and his last game was played on September 4, 1982. The Marianao native was selected an All-Star three times and finished with a record of 229-172.

Luis Tiant died on October 8, 2024 in the United States. He did it without knowing that he was nominated, but several times he spoke about this topic, with some criticism of the organizers, since he stated that he should have been part of the Hall of Fame a long time ago.

In a note he gave to ESPN in 2016, the player stated: “It’s been 21 years since I should have been in the Hall of Fame. I’m not going to be fawning over anyone and talking because people say: ‘Talk to this one or that one.’ And I tell them: ‘Talk to who, my record is there. I don’t have to talk to anyone.'”

On the other hand, he had expressed: “When they want to vote, they should vote. I’m not going to go crazy thinking about that. The Hall of Fame is my family”. And he also asked: “The only thing is that they’re not going to put me on after I die. When you’re alive you can enjoy your family, your children, your friends. But dead, what are you going to enjoy when you’re dead?”
