Madrid pays tribute to female athletes at its Champions Gala 2024

The Madrid City Council has celebrated the sixth edition of the Gala Campeonas 2024, an initiative that was born in 2019 and seeks to recognize the careers of athletes, women’s clubs and major sporting events starring women. Likewise, with this tribute, which took place at the Centrocentro Music Box Auditorium, the City Council wants to highlight the sport practiced by women, recognize the talent of female athletes and promote their visibility to create references.

During the award ceremony, which was led by the sports journalist Noemí de Miguel, the head of the Delegate Area for Sports, Sonia Cea, was accompanied by the delegate councilor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Ángel Niño; the councilor of Tetuán, Paula Gómez-Angulo, and representatives of the municipal groups.

Twelve award categories

The City Council has dedicated a triple recognition to sporting success in the 2023-24 season (team sport), rewarding the Spanish women’s water polo, artistic swimming and 3×3 basketball teams. Awards collected by Olympic champions Jennifer Pareja, Sara Saldaña, Lilou Lluis, Juana Camilión and Gracia Alonso.

There have also been three athletes deserving of recognition for sporting success 2023-24 (individual sport), which went to Paralympic athletes Sara Martínez (silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games) and Alba García (bronze medal in Paris). and in the Olympic canoeist María Corbera (Olympic diploma in Paris).

In this edition, recognition for its career as an entity linked to sports practice has gone to the Movistar Estudiantes Club. The award was collected by Paula Saravia, a player from the Women’s League team and trained in the club’s youth team.

In the category of sporting event that promotes the participation of women in sports, we wanted to highlight the Municipal Sports Games, which this season celebrate their 45th edition.

The prize for young promise went to Marina Manzanares, current Spanish children’s champion in women’s Olympic rowing skiff. Sacramento Moyano, considered the pioneer of judo in our country, has also been awarded with recognition for her entire life dedicated to the sport.

María Durán has received the award for perseverance in sports practicehaving spent more than half a century practicing his great passion: basketball. Finally, the work carried out by the presenter and journalist Chus Galón has been highlighted, who has received recognition for the dissemination and promotion of female athletes.

As an appetizer to the awards ceremony, attendees were able to enjoy the performance of the b-girl Ana Furia, current Spanish breaking champion and 2022 champion of Red Bull BC One, a discipline that has just debuted as an Olympic sport. at the recent Paris Olympic Games. In her performance, she was accompanied by DJ Nabora.
