Marco Angulo (†22): 35 days after devastating accident – Ecuador national player died

Doctors fought for the life of Ecuador international Marco Angulo for over a month. But in the end the young footballer dies as a result of an accident. His club says goodbye with an emotional statement.

Ecuadorian national soccer player Marco Angulo has died after a car accident at the age of 22. “His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts,” his club LDU Quito said on Facebook and condoled with his family and loved ones.

Angulo was hospitalized for 35 days after a traffic accident in the capital Quito, Ecuador’s Ecuavisa television reported. The injuries to his brain were significant, which is why the midfielder had to undergo several operations.

Two other people were killed in the accident, in which the car crashed into a metal structure weighing several tons, as “El Universo” reported. One of them was also a football player.

Two serious car accidents

Angulo was considered a great talent early on. In 2019 he took part in the U17 World Cup with Ecuador and made his debut for his country’s senior national team in November 2022 at the age of 20 in a 0-0 draw against Iraq. He played his second and final game in March 2023 in a 2-1 win against Australia.

Shortly before, he had moved from his youth club Independiente, with which he became champions in 2021, to FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer (MLS) for almost 2.8 million euros. But the Ecuadorian was never able to live up to expectations in the USA and only played 24 league games in just under a year. Last March, the midfield talent returned to his homeland on loan to first division club LDU Quito. He played 20 games there.

For Angulo, his ultimately fatal crash was the second serious car accident in which he was involved. In 2022, his cousin was killed in a serious collision in the city of Guayaquil, with Angulo in the car at the time.
