Former soccer world champion Mats Hummels defends himself against the accusation that he fled to the dressing room before the final whistle as a substitute in AS Roma’s league game against Hellas Verona (2:3).
“I’m being asked about this a lot at the moment, so let’s just clarify. “I didn’t go to the dressing room early yesterday,” the 35-year-old defender wrote on platform I don’t know how to come up with the other story, to be honest.”
According to “Bild”, the commentator for the broadcasting TV channel Sky Sports Italia is said to have announced during the broadcast that Hummels had interrupted his warm-up and gone into the dressing room. However, this was not visible on the TV images.
Hummels is still waiting for a breakthrough in Rome
Things are also not going well in terms of sport for the former defense chief of Borussia Dortmund, who moved to the Italian first division club AS Roma at the beginning of September. Hummels had not played a competitive game there until matchday 9, and in his debut against AC Fiorentina a week ago he scored an own goal shortly after coming on as a substitute.
“That’s why I felt incredibly sorry for him. He’s generally not going through a very easy time right now. You wouldn’t wish that on anyone,” Florence professional Robin Gosens said about Hummels in the “Copa TS” podcast. “Too bad for him. Very, very unfortunate. In football it’s just magical sometimes.”
Rome coach Ivan Juric recently defended his decision not to let Hummels play a single minute since his move to Italy. “I’ll look at who’s in a better mood and then decide,” said the Croatian. “I don’t pay attention to age or CV. I’m just looking to see who gives me more trust.” Juric only took over the coaching position from the Italian Daniele De Rossi last month – a few days after Hummels’ arrival in Rome.
