MLB will have robot referees in spring

Major League Baseball (MLB) wants to continue advancing technology and for this reason they will experiment with robot referees during spring training for the 2025 season.

In total there will be 13 stadiums that house 19 teams in which these robots will be present that will seek to improve the analysis of each pitch and see if they will be ready to be used in the 2026 campaign.

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred explained that he wants to be able to reach an agreement with the Umpires Association before December 1, the date on which his collective contract ends.

«I would be interested in having it in 2026. We have a collective bargaining obligation there. That is obviously a term and condition of employment. We will also have to work on that issue,” he said.

“There are two aspects to that test. There is what the clubs think about her and also what the players think about her? And we will have to analyze both,” Manfred added.

This technology has been used in the last two seasons in Triple-A stadiums to prove its effectiveness, so they hope to be able to demonstrate its good performance in the majors during spring training.
