Rutte and Trump discuss the future of NATO in view of the transition in the United States
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with US President-elect Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday, according to a spokesperson for the alliance. The meeting focused on pressing global security issues and challenges facing NATO.
Farah Dakhlallah, a NATO spokeswoman, confirmed the discussion in a statement, adding that Rutte also met with Congressman Mike Waltz, Trump’s pick for national security adviser, and other members of Trump’s national security team.
Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister who became the head of NATO last month, has been credited for his ability to build a good relationship with Trump during the latter’s first term as president.
Strengthening NATO ties amid global tensions
The meeting comes at a critical time for NATO, as the alliance faces growing tensions with Russia, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and challenges in maintaining unity among member states.
Rutte’s visit highlights the importance of maintaining strong US-NATO relations as Trump prepares to return to the White House. Trump was previously known for his vocal criticism of NATO, often calling for greater financial contributions from member nations.
