New course for Rice Football: Scott Abell takes the helm | Eulerpool News
Rice University has named Davidson’s Scott Abell as its new head football coach, setting the stage for a new era. The 54-year-old succeeds Mike Bloomgren, who was recently relieved of his duties. The previous assistant coach Pete Alamar took over responsibility on an interim basis for the current season. In an official statement, Tommy McClelland, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Rice University, was enthusiastic about the new commitment: “After intensive discussions with Scott, it quickly became clear that we had found the right leader for our program. Scott has immediately made a positive impact in each of his previous engagements and shares the vision of developing winners both on and off the field. I am pleased to welcome Scott and his family to Rice.” With an impressive record of 47 wins and 28 losses over seven years with the Wildcats, Abell brings a wealth of experience. He himself describes his start as the ideal time for himself and his family and is looking forward to the challenges: “Today our journey begins, on which we are aiming for championships. Go Owls!” Under Mike Bloomgren’s leadership, the Rice team posted a record of 24 wins and 52 losses, making a fresh start seem welcome. The decision for Abell marks the beginning of an ambitious program to revitalize Rice football.
