The New York team lost 76:98 to the struggling Philadelphia 113ers, suffering its fourth defeat in the last five games. It was also the second loss in Game 3 of the NBA Cup, meaning Brooklyn has virtually no chance of advancing to the quarterfinals.
For the hosts, who were resting star Joel Embiid, Jared McCain stood out with 30 points. With only their third victory of the season, the 76ers, who had started the season disastrously, ended a series of five consecutive defeats.
The Mavericks squander their lead – but still win
The Dallas Mavericks were, however, able to celebrate a victory. The Texans won 123-120 against the Denver Nuggets despite a decline in performance in the second half. Dallas had already led by 20 points after the first two quarters, but lost that lead. With two minutes remaining, the Mavericks were trailing by three points, but turned things around again.

Despite the loss, Nuggets star Nikola Jokic was the outstanding player of the game. The three-time MVP was out for a good two weeks due to the birth of his son, but came back in style with a triple-double. The Serb scored 33 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and delivered ten assists. The Mavericks had to do without their outstanding injured player Luka Doncic; in his absence, Naji Marshall surprisingly shone with 26 points.
Warriors’ first quarterfinalist
The Nuggets’ loss also means the Golden State Warriors are the first NBA Cup quarterfinalists. The Californians had previously won 112:108 against the New Orleans Pelicans and can no longer be pushed out of the lead in Group C of the Western Conference thanks to the victory of the Mavericks.
