The NFL is back in Germany. The Carolina Panthers won the guest game in Munich. The team from Charlotte prevailed 20:17 after overtime in the Allianz Arena against the New York Giants, who competed without German football professional Jakob Johnson.
In front of 70,132 spectators and a number of celebrities such as Bayern footballers Manuel Neuer, Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala, the Giants had achieved nothing in the first two quarters, but after a 10-0 lead at the break, an exciting game developed. The Giants were able to equalize shortly before the end of regular time, with Panthers kicker Eddy Pinero making the decision in overtime.
The NFL will probably move to Berlin in 2025
Johnson, who was born in Stuttgart, was brought back into the training squad for the Giants’ trip to Germany – but there was no place for him in the squad for the game. He still enjoyed the second NFL game in Munich after 2022 and the fourth overall – last year the world’s most valuable league was a guest in Frankfurt twice.
The National Football League wants to play in the Berlin Olympic Stadium in 2025. “We are in contact with city representatives,” confirms NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in an exclusive “Blickpunkt Sport” interview. Germany is a particularly attractive location for the NFL, not only because of the growing fan base, but also because of the excellent infrastructure and media partners that bring NFL games to German television.
